To take root in our hearts, the Gospel must
be remembered, take root in love, and have loving care. Its growth is therefore hindered by flightiness
of mind, hardness of heart, and development of vices. Careless and vain minds lie open to every
chance thought, so when they receive the word of God it is crushed by their worthless thoughts
or their evil company. A hard heart is locked up in itself, or narrowed
within its own limits. And our vices make us lose the Gospel among
anxieties, quarrels, and love of wealth.
