A Beginner’s Meditation

A Beginner’s Meditation

Welcome to this guided meditation, an invitation to awaken your true self, your natural state – that of infinite joy. Let’s use this opportunity to still the body, still the mind, still the emotions by taking the consciousness within. Before we begin it is important to select a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed, perhaps a location in nature or before a small altar in your own room. Now that you have found a space that is conducive to meditating it is important to assume the correct meditation posture. The spine should be held erect making sure the back does not touch the back of the chair, chin parallel to the ground, the chest out and the shoulders back without tension. The hands with the palms up turned should be resting on the thighs at the juncture of the thigh and abdomen. The body should be stable and relaxed. Close your eyes and gently lift the gaze to the point between the eyebrows. Relax the body. Consciously leave aside all thoughts of the world. Let us begin our meditation with a prayer. Oh Spirit, teach me to open the gate of meditation that alone leads to thy blessed presence. Om. Shanti. Peace. Amen. Now let us practice a breathing exercise to help rid the body of restlessness. Expel the breath through the mouth in a double exhalation. Then inhale deeply through the nostrils and tense the whole body to a count of six. Expel the breath through the mouth with a double exhalation and relax the tension. Repeat this three times. Now forget the breath. Let it flow in and out naturally of its own accord as in ordinary breathing. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the stillness and peace within. Imagine that you’re filling your heart with the peace of meditation and feel that peace expand to all your body parts. Let’s practice an affirmation. Repeat the following affirmation several times, aloud or mentally, with deep concentration and faith in its materialization. I am submerged in eternal light It permeates every particle of my being I am living in that light The Divine Spirit fills me within and without I am submerged in eternal light It permeates every particle of my being I am living in that light The Divine Spirit fills me within and without I am submerged in eternal light It permeates every particle of my being I am living in that light The Divine Spirit fills me within and without Let’s end with a prayer. Oh Spirit, break the boundaries of the little waves of my life that I may join the ocean of thy vastness. Om. Peace. Amen.
