Sangeeta Mehta, from Chennai, is asking the question: “In Yoga Nidra, I cannot do the reverse counting correctly. Please provide guidance”. You are not able to count backwards correctly because you fall asleep. And if you do not fall asleep, then you get lost in your thoughts. And when you do not enter complete relaxation, then you will not be able to count correctly. However, if at anytime, the body is excessively tired, then yoga nidra is a very good method to achieve a good deep sleep. So keep in mind, the next time you do the practice, that body must not be tired. Ensure that mind is not in a state of confusion, or tiredness. So when you enter yoga nidra by retiring from all angles and experiencing deep relaxation, then your awakening will be maintained. And then while inhaling and exhaling, how difficult will it be to maintain your counting. It will become very easy. So don’t get worried. Taking it easy, maintaining an appropriate daily routine, if you don’t sleep well at night, then also you will fall asleep in yoga nidra. If you are too tired, or if your mind is worried about something, then mind will dwell on that very topic and counting will not be steady. Hence, backward counting won’t be successful. So either due to sleep or due to fickleness of mind, your yoga nidra practice is not happening properly. Keep making an effort. Give some time to yourself. Give attention to the relaxation of your body. Body should be very well rested. And mind should not have any conflict in it. So try that during interactions with others – either with friends, or family, that there is no reason to generate conflict. Conditions can be tough sometimes but that doesn’t mean that we should perturb and disturb our mind. So be skillful in your interactions with others; do practice of yoga asanas; do practice of pranayama. These ingredients help to strengthen your practice of yoga nidra.
