How To Teach Yoga & Meditation For Children : How To Teach Kids To Meditate While Sitting

Hi, welcome to Expert Village. I am Sharon
Tessandori the owner of a Yoga Studio located in Lexington, Kentucky. I’m here with you
this morning to speak about meditation. So the wonderful thing about meditation is that
you essentially just need your breaths, somewhere to sit; either a chair or a cushion for the
floor and some time. So that’s essentially all that you need. Once you do carve out some
time for your meditation try to choose the same location for your meditation, same location,
same time and use a timer. If you’re a beginner work up to 5 minutes of time just setting
your timer for that length of time and when you start you’re starting, when you’re finished
turn the timer off and be done with it. So I think that one of the misconceptions about
meditation is that you have to be sitting on the floor on a full lotus position to meditate,
which isn’t necessarily true. For some of us that position just isn’t assessable. So
you can use a chair for meditation. When you are sitting in a chair you would want to see
that your thighs are parallel to the floor and that your feet could rest on the floor.
Since mine aren’t I’m going to take a block which is pretty common in yoga. If you don’t
have a block you could just use a big thick book or anything else that you could rest
your feet on to elevate your feet and your knees to get your thighs parallel to the floor.
Once you come into this position sit up nice and tall letting your spine be perpendicular
to the floor, rest your hands down on top of the knees, relax your arms and close your
eyes.
