Kids yoga: Creativity through movement

Kids yoga: Creativity through movement

I love how you move in it and it makes you so calm. And it just feels nice,
it makes me feel loose. I think that kids come for
different reasons. There’s a lot of fun in
the class, a lot of play, creativity. And then also connecting
with friends. I think what’s really important
is cultivating connection with the kids in the class,
with the teacher, with themselves,
and with the natural world. Some of the benefits of
kid’s yoga would be high and low muscle
tone, balance,coordination,
self esteem. Because of the body,
mind and emotion connection, there is such a broad range
of benefits. They’re constantly performing: they need to write tests
and exams, and yoga is just a great
way for them to feel that calm and balance
the anxiety and get rid of it: it’s a lovely tool
for them to use. Typical yoga class: we usually start
with the kids sitting down on
the mat: they’ll sit in easy seat, criss-cross applesauce
or sukhasana as we call it. Usually we go on an adventure,
which has a theme. We can use a book, we can use
different songs, props. Going from the warming up,
we’ll go into the yoga poses. Today we used the
Magic Mat book and each pose has a
different affirmation. So we’ll go through
all the poses. So after all the fun and play
and yoga and energy going out, we’ll bring the energy in
where the kids lie down and we do a relaxation. And then at the end we’ll say,
thank you, namaste, and bring the hands together and
say thank you for the class. Usually what namaste means
in the kiddies’ class is the bright light in me sees
the beautiful light in you.
