Sama Vritti Equal (Harmonious Breathing)

Sama Vritti Equal (Harmonious Breathing)

This exercise is called Sama Vritti
which means equal breathing. As the name
says the inhalation and exhalation lasts
for the same amount of time. It is an easy exercise to practice anywhere and
it’s also quite safe. The biggest benefit of this exercise is that it helps the
brain focus on one point in particular the breath and as a result it can be
used in order to prepare us for
meditation. It’s best to start practicing
this exercise for a short count three or four and slowly build it up. As the
duration of each cycle becomes longer the parasympathetic nervous system will
be activated more bringing us more into a calm state. I’m gonna start cueing
this exercise for you starting for a count of three. You can find a tall spine,
keep your shoulders down, close your eyes, empty your mind. Start focusing on your
breath. Start breathing in for a count of 1, 2, 3 and exhale gently from the
nose for 2, 3 inhale for a count of 1, 2, 3 and exhale
making the breath last 3, inhale again this time 4 2, 3, 4 and exhale four 2, 3, 4 inhale again for 2, 3, 4 and
exhale for 2, 3, 4 start inhaling for a count of 5 2, 3, 4, 5 and release for 2, 3, 4, 5. You can carry on on your
own making each round a little bit longer than the
previous one. Try to maintain an upright posture and if at some point you find that your
body is tensing up you can reduce the
time of your inhalation and exhalation.
When you’re ready you can open your eyes again. One of the effects that you would
expect to get out of this exercise is stop racing thoughts in our mind and
finding inner peace.
