Standing Yoga Poses : Extended Mountain Yoga Pose

Standing Yoga Poses : Extended Mountain Yoga Pose

Extended mountain is the same alignment of
mountain pose. Remember that the alignment and the structure of the body in mountain
pose we incorporate into many of the other standing postures. So notice, notice what’s
happening in your body as we do mountain. You can do extended mountain with or without
a block. I’m going to demonstrate with a block. So we want our feet again, open up the toes
nice and wide planting each toe one down at a time. Again feel your roots being extended
into the Earth, feeling that sense of solidity like the Earth. Lift the ankles energetically.
Soften the knees. Engage the quads. Sort of feels like you are squeezing the gluts by
tucking your tail bone forward. Engage your abdominal muscles, lift the rib cage, draw
the shoulders up, relax, come back and down, chin parallel to the Earth and feel that connection
with the sky. Taking the block and placing it right in between the inner thighs squeezing
the block. This is actually an excellent way of feeling the alignment that we bring into
all of the yoga poses. Squeezing this block or you can use a pillow if you don’t have
a yoga block helps to draw the tail bone forward, helps to engage the quads, helps to align
the spine and with extended mountain we are doing one or two ways. We can just simply
draw the arms up to the sky. For those of you that have shoulder issues and feel tension
in the shoulders you can just very gently draw those elbows down, breathe and breathe
and breathe. I like to think of extended mountain too as my hands are out wide and that I’m
extending joy and healing energy out into the world as I breath deeply. Then relax the arms down.
