Three Main Enemies on the Path of Spirituality | Obstacles on the path of Devotion | Part 2

The real brave person is the one who can defeat the demons inside. So he is now going to enumerate these impediments in the path of the highest realization. Carelessness is another big impediment. We all know that pride is a bad thing. There is nobody here who does not know that. And yet when the thought of pride comes we do not take action Inside pride has reared its head. Ahh, that is alright. Now if we are careful you would say, “No, this is not the right sentiment, not the right thought. Take it out. When you eat food and a stone comes in the food, do you say “nevermind, let it go in?” No, you are careful. I do not want this. Throw it out. Similarly, we all know it is wrong to harbor negativity, to harbor grudges. We all know that. Why do we still harbor them? Carelessness! It is alright, Never mind. That attitude of carelessness is what pulls us down. So the next impediment is similar, laziness another impediment. what is laziness? not doing what we are supposed to do. we know we have heard that we should always think of God why do not we do it? Laziness! We know when we take the name, we should attach the mind there. why do not we do? Laziness. The biggest enemy in this human body is laziness. Now tell me, everybody who has come to the retreat you all have the faith, that there is a God and He is your Goal. Now tell me, do you put your best to attain Him? No. Why not? Laziness. Even after knowing, we do not do it. What a big problem! It’s not that you can become God-realized in a day. You won’t become Saint in a day. But how much we can do, that much we do not do. and that is the pity of it. So somebody who is careful, you know over these years of preaching, I have seen the correlation preaching in India mainly, all kinds of people come. So I see that boys who were careless in studies, you know, “does not matter.” When they come to devotion, they have the same attitude. And others who are careful, they have developed this attitude of applying themselves, taking a few extra steps, pushing themselves, more than to the extent of mind and body complain but still push. When they come to devotion, they have the same attitude. They apply themselves completely. They do not say, “okay my mind says let me sleep. Never mind.” They say, No. I have to do what I know is right. So this laziness becomes another impediment. Absence of detachment. Now if somebody has attachment to coffee, so the mind is again and again going to coffee. It’s coming off from God. People when they are not retired they think, you know once I am retired I will only engage in devotion Swamiji. There is nothing else. And after retirement, what do they do? Take their grandchild. Now they are taking care of their grandchild. Swamiji, he is my Gopal! You said, see God in everyone. I am seeing God in him. Do not fool yourself. If you were seeing God in everyone, you would see God in the neighbour’s child as well. Not only in your grandchild. This is simply attachment. Another strong impediment in the highest realization. Because the highest realization requires complete attachment in Him, which requires complete detachment from everything else. No. But can not we just have it 50/50? God says, look I do not compromise my standards. Whenever your surrender is complete let me know. I will find out. Because God is sitting in the heart. He will come to know, all right, now this Soul has no attachment to Rasgolla, Gulabjamun, Samosa. All right, it’s all clear. I can now come. So lack of detachment is another impediment. This mind is such that in one time it can only be attached to one thing. Can you laugh loudly and also blow your cheeks at the same time? You can not. It’s impossible. Either you blow your cheeks or you laugh loudly. You can not do both together. So similarly this mind is such either you attach it to God or you attach it to the world. So what is the impediment in attaching it to God? The attachment to the world. If we do not have the hunger for God, why is it? Because the mind is attached to the world. That attachment, when it is cut, where else do the mind go? There is only one other area. One is the world and the other is God. Now people say, Swamiji my mind does not go to God. What to do? Does your mind go the world? No, it does not go the world also. Does not go the world, does not go to God. Really? Does the mind remain in some pending situation? Animated suspension? Impossible! If the mind does not go in to god, there is only one reason. It is attached to the world. Now it is possible, the attachment is subtle, you are not able to detect what the thief is. The desire for prestige, desire for security, all the varieties of desires. But it is those material desires that are preventing the mind from going to God. And that’s why Maharshi Patanjali had earlier said, Detachment is essential. So people say you know, one who is detached then is he totally devoid of love? The one who is detached, develops a higher kind of love. That is, he sees everybody as a part of God and his attachment is to God. And he interacts with everybody with that sentiment. That they are all parts of God. That’s the divine love. But that can only come, when we first of all detach ourselves from the world. So this condition of “exclusive surrender to God” is very important.
