Wellness Moment: Chair Yoga Episode 2 – Seated Cow Position

– Hi, I’m Jane, and this
is your Wellness Moment. Today, we’re learning about
the benefits of chair yoga. I’m joined by Jennifer, a yoga therapist for intensive cardiac rehab
at St. Joe’s Ann Arbor. And tell me Jennifer, what
are some of the benefits of chair yoga? – Well Jane, chair yoga is great
for balance and flexibility and also reduces that
stress response in the body. And also improves body awareness. – And I love that you could
probably do chair yoga anywhere, at home, or when you’re working, or just whenever you want
to recenter yourself. – That’s right, Jane. Why don’t we try a few poses? – That sounds great. Okay, so you’re gonna bring yourself into a steady, comfortable seat. Feet are on the floor nicely planted, and your spine is nice and tall. And you can kind of just let
your hands rest in your lap, and your arms are relaxed. And so, we’re gonna move
into a posed called cow, but it’s just bringing your
chest forward a little bit. You might even close your eyes as you bring your chest forward and you tilt your chin upwards. And take a nice, deep breath there. And then when you’re exhaling, we’re gonna transition to another pose and look down with your head
and roll your chest back. So towards the back of your chair just kind of rounding your spine. And then we’ll transition
back into that cow pose. So you’re gonna bring your chest forward and kind of lift your chin
and take a deep inhale. And as you’re exhaling looking down, bring your chest back and round your spine towards the back of your chair. And really exhale out all your breath. So you might transition that a few times, maybe five to 10 times,
just moving you chest, lifting your chin as you inhale forward. And as you exhale looking
down towards your belly and rounding your spine towards
the back of your chairs, so exhaling all the way out. Yeah, so those movements of the spine, you just start to relax there. – This is great and I feel
like the best part is that it’s very low stress on
the joints and muscles. – Yeah, actually chair yoga is
really accessible for anyone. And so the fact that there’s no stress on the joints or muscles, gives you an opportunity
to just really relax into your poses and into your body. – That’s great. (upbeat pleasant music)
