Yoga Can Offer Cancer Patients Benefits

Yoga Can Offer Cancer Patients Benefits

(melodious instrumental music) – [Narrator] Nearly anyone
can benefit from yoga but the U of M Comprehensive Cancer Center offers a yoga class designed specifically for people with cancer. Helping them to actively
participate in their own healing. – Our yoga class is designed specifically for cancer survivors. We also, the classes
open to their loved ones or friends or caregivers. I think there’s a unique fellowship that evolves between the participants because everyone in the room
is either a cancer survivor or has been very closely
impacted by cancer. And we all bring into the yoga room our own physical histories and different surgeries,
different treatments, and it’s important that our
yoga practices reflect that. So far many of the
participants have reported benefits in mind and body
associated with the yoga practice. One thing we hear a lot of is that people feel more relaxed
when they leave class, that the class is a great
way to reduce stress and at the same time
people leave energized. People report greater
flexibility, increased mobility, especially in some areas
that may have been impacted by surgery or treatments. People also report more
endurance or strength that they might accumulate
through the yoga practice, less muscle tension. You don’t need any yoga
experience whatsoever to participate in this class. If you have yoga experience you’re absolutely welcome to join us. Really the classes is
designed to be for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns about whether a yoga program would be good for you right now. If you have any physical limitations that you’re concerned about, it’s always a good idea to
talk to a doctor or nurse or someone who’s part
of your treatment plan to make sure that you know
coming into the class, what’s recommended and
what’s not recommended. So we certainly encourage people to let their caregivers know, let their providers know that this is something you’re thinking of and open it up to them
for some feedback as well. (melodious instrumental music)
